While recounting his 1995 attempt to return to the U.S. from war-torn El Salvador, Alex Sanchez reveals how he and about 20 others were kidnapped and held hostage by Mexican federales. After being pulled off a bus en route to Acapulco, they were detained in a motel, where the corrupt officers demanded ransom that most couldn’t pay. Sanchez unexpectedly gained the trust of their captors, becoming the key intermediary who coordinated ransom payments and secured food from a sympathetic local vendor. After nearly two weeks of captivity, Sanchez orchestrated a daring escape with the help of the vendor, sneaking out to catch a bus to Acapulco. From there, the dangerous journey continued as they skirted highway checkpoints and braved harsh Texas heat to finally cross into the U.S.
