Vivien Thomas – Black History Month
Vivien Thomas in an extraordinary man. He was the first to successfully perform open heart surgeries and developed procedures that have saved millions of lives. He encountered racism daily and was paid and classified as a janitor even though he was doing postdoctoral work. He had no education past high school, so needless to say he was a genius. His white supervisor took most of the credit for his work. He stood behind the surgeon and verbally instructed him in many successful open heart surgeries because he wasn’t allowed to operate in human patients because his lack of formal training and race. He was finally given an honorary doctorate by Johns Hopkins more than a decade later. He persevered even though he didn’t get the credit. He is truly inspiring.
