Despite it being 2023, the mafia remains active, according to experts Mike Campi and Dan Dorsky. Analyzing the current state of the organization, they compared it to an NFL team with a capacity to recover from losses and adapt. They attributed the mafia’s resilience to shifts in law enforcement focus after 9/11, as attention was redirected to international terrorism. This allowed organized crime to operate under the radar for the last 20 years. In addition, the advent of advanced communication and finance technologies like cryptocurrency enabled the mafia to operate with relative impunity. Despite advancements making crime detection easier, the experts argued that the reduction of investigative manpower and a lack of focus from prosecutors allowed mafia activities to continue largely unimpeded. They advocated for a return to detailed investigations and the use of forfeiture as a tool against the organization.
