Javier “Panama” Card, a notorious DC kingpin, opened up about his violent encounters with law enforcement and his harrowing experience in Panama’s harsh prison system. At 17, Card was shot in the thigh by police during a robbery targeting tourists. Undeterred, he continued his criminal activities and at 19 was shot again—this time hitting a nerve in his leg—during a robbery involving Colombian businessmen. Arrested and sent to an adult prison in Panama, Card described the experience as night and day compared to U.S. prisons, calling American facilities “five-star hotels” in comparison. He revealed the overcrowded conditions, severe psychological and physical hardships, and rampant violence inside Panamanian prisons. Most strikingly, Card confirmed the existence of armed shootouts within the prison walls—events unheard of in American correctional facilities and ones that would prompt immediate shutdown and military intervention in the U.S. His testimony shines a light on the brutal realities of criminal life and incarceration in Panama.
