In a candid interview, Devon Dudley opened up about WWE’s role in forcing his retirement from full-time wrestling in 2016. Despite feeling physically fit and eager to continue, Dudley explained that WWE’s decision hinged on his tag team partner Bubba Ray Dudley’s refusal to re-sign. WWE required both signatures to finalize their contracts, meaning Devon’s own deal was invalid without Bubba’s consent.
Devon pleaded with Bubba to stay “just one more year,” but Bubba chose to leave the company. This left WWE unwilling to offer Devon a solo wrestling contract, effectively ending his in-ring career. After expressing frustration with management, including a heated exchange with Vince McMahon, Devon was offered a producer role. Although initially reluctant, he accepted the backstage position to support his family.
Devon emphasized that while he never truly wanted to retire, WWE’s system left him with no choice but to transition away from wrestling.
