1979 SPECIAL REPORT: "CHICAGO FEMALE STRIP & SEARCH"
CHICAGO. Feb. 17 (AP) — The Federal and local authorities are investigating “crude and ugly” reports that Chicago police matrons have subjected women to intimate body searches after arrests for traffic violations and other minor offenses.
The authorities are also trying to determine whether male officers watched the alleged strip searches on closed‐circuit television.
United States Attorney Thomas P. Sullivan said office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with the Chicago Police Department, were investigating complaints that the police engaged in a “post‐arrest procedure involving strip‐searching women subsequent to arrest for traffic violations.”
The Illinois American Civil Liberties Union, which is planning a class‐action suit against the city in connection with the alleged procedures, said it had received “a substantial number” of complaints of searches in arrests for minor offenses.
