1987 SPECIAL REPORT : "VOICES OF DEFIANCE"

A brilliant documentary by Joan Harvey from Parallel Films in New York City takes us on a trip across the U.S. with singer Richie Havens, looking at the ills in American society–particularly the threats to civil liberties–and the need to organize and struggle to change things. In addition to Havens (who sings some songs with considerable political impact), many peace workers, civil rights activists, Puerto Rican Independistas, labor unionists and Salvadoran refugees are featured along with prominent people such as Harry Belafonte, William Kunstler, Bishop Matthiesen, and Congressman George Crockett.
