After the Troy Ave shooting, New York Police Commissioner, Bill Bratton, made some strong statements about “so-called rap artists who are basically thugs.” During a sit-down with DJ Vlad, he slammed Bratton for reinforcing negative stereotypes and believes referencing rappers as “thugs” is just another way of calling them the N-word.

“He’s just trying to throw motherf****** under the bus ’cause he got an ongoing beef with Hip-Hop—just black people in general.” The rapper argued that the commissioner made it seem that the incident happens too often, which he disputes it’s not the case. “I can’t remember the last real Hip-Hop show that I been to and a Motherf***** start shooting and s*** like that.”

When the Brand Nubian rapper was asked if there was an underlining meaning to the NYPD official calling rappers “thugs” and he said, “Of course, it’s all code words. They don’t call young white kids who run around doing some s*** thugs. Like, thug is a code word for n*****.”
