J Prince: The Boogeyman of Hip Hop

In any industry, there are always invisible hands that work behind the scenes, rearranging and shaping things as they see fit. Rather than wield their power with bravado or arrogance, these figures do whatever they can to avoid the scale of their reach in the game coming to light. Preferring to conduct business based on “respect”, these figures can be powerful allies or very dangerous enemies. As when you fall afoul of their view on things, you can bet that there’ll be consequences.

In hip-hop, there are few figures that fit this bill quite like James Lamont Prince, better known as J Prince. The driving force behind Houston’s Rap-A-Lot Records, the former car salesman turned high-powered hip-hop executive has become one of the most formidable figures in hip-hop history.
