Why Eminem Hates 8 Mile

At this point, the tradition of the rapper-turned-actor might as well be a part of the journey that a major hip-hop artist must go on to complete their legacy. Over the years, almost every MC that ever acquired fame and fortune has had aspirations of appearing on the big screen. Split between short cameo roles and times where MC’s take on the responsibility of lead actor, these performances can range from inadvisable to inadvertently hilarious and sometimes, inspired.

For many legendary figures such as LL Cool J, Ice T and Ice Cube, acting became a natural progression once they felt that their days on the battleground of the genre were reaching their end. In other instances, you have people such as Will Smith and Queen Latifah where there’s a good chance that your average person is more acquainted with their movies than their music. And elsewhere, you have the whole host of rappers-turned-actors whose brief attempts to infiltrate Hollywood were doomed from the start.

But among all of the filmographies of MC’s, none leaves people more puzzled than Eminem. After receiving almost universal acclaim for his performance as Jimmy Smith Jr in the semi-biographical 2002 film 8 MIle, it seemed as though his role in the Curtis Hanson-helmed flick might just open up an entirely new world for Eminem. But where some had imagined that he could follow Tupac’s example by managing to juggle successful careers in Hollywood and hip-hop simultaneously, Em mysteriously shied away from taking on any other major cinematic roles.
