Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux continued to discuss the life and legacy of their brother, Jean-Michel Basquiat. They talked about how Jean-Michel struggled with fame. They recalled the shock they felt when he died from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988, when he was just 27 and at the peak of his career. After his unexpected death, their father was integral in preserving his legacy, collecting his art and ensuring owed money was paid. He also led an authentication committee for Jean-Michel’s pieces, closing it in 2012. Despite the monetary value of his art skyrocketing after his death, both sisters prioritize the preservation and integrity of their brother’s legacy over monetary gain. One highlight they mentioned was Jean-Michel’s painting being displayed in the White House during Obama’s final Christmas as president.
