Erik Prince, founder of Blackwater, shared insights into his work post-Blackwater and his interactions with Donald Trump. After selling Blackwater, Prince moved to the UAE, where he set up an 800-person battalion to handle Somali piracy. This initiative reduced piracy significantly by targeting pirate logistics rather than just chasing pirates at sea. Prince’s efficacy in combating piracy led to a proposal he made later concerning the Afghanistan War during Trump’s administration. Prince met Trump briefly in 2016 and saw him again in 2019. In April 2017, Prince proposed a cost-effective “skeletal structure capacity” to Trump’s administration, aiming to streamline operations with a smaller, consistent force. Despite its potential, Pentagon officials dismissed Prince’s approach, preferring traditional military strategies. Prince maintains his plan could have provided sustained Afghan mentorship and effective air support at reduced costs, refining U.S. involvement in the region.
