Before becoming famous as part of the comedy duo Cheech & Chong, Cheech Marin tried to audition for Frank Zappa’s band while still an English major. After a random encounter with Zappa, Marin was invited to audition for Zappa’s satirical fifties band the next day at Hollywood’s famed Log Cabin. Despite this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Marin left the US for Canada the following day, fearing his imminent draft into the Vietnam War. While in Canada, Marin joined the draft resistance movement led by David Harris to protest America’s involvement in the war. Also, during his last months in the US, Marin discovered his love for pottery, a medium that satisfied his artistic ambitions. Eventually ending up in Vancouver, Marin was introduced to Tommy Chong and started writing for Chong’s improv group at his family’s topless bar, leading to the iconic comedic duo.
