In this clip, Dave Mays talk about his thought process for starting The Source Awards back in the mid-’90s and the intent behind wanting to spotlight some of the brightest stars in hip hop. He details the business behind landing a television deal for The Source Awards and what it was like work as the producer for the live event. Dave Mays also talks about one of the most famous moments in the history of the show when Suge Knight indirectly condemned P. Diddy for his heavy presence in the music videos by Bad Boy artists, by implying that the CEO’s dance moves were overshadowing the talent on his label’s roster. And lastly, he discusses exactly how that moment helped jumpstart the simmering East Coast vs West Coast beef.
