Donell Jones on Hustling Before Singing, Alcoholism, Usher, Left Eye, Big Pun (Full Interview)

In this full-length interview, R&B veteran Donell Jones talks about growing up on the Southside of Chicago, gang banging, and getting arrested for armed robbery at the age of 15. Donell then explained that the OGs kept things under control while growing up in Chicago, in comparison to the “chaos” in the city today. Moving along, he spoke about his father being a pastor and also inspiring his love of music, along with his grandparents and mother.

As the conversation continues, the 49-year-old reflects back on connecting with Heavy D’s former DJ and legendary record producer named Eddie F (from Untouchable Entertainment and LaFace Records), writing music for Usher’s album, and signing to one of the hottest R&B labels in the country.

Moving along, Donell shares his reaction to the news of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes’ passing back in 2002. From there, he spoke about his song “Where I Wanna Be,” which he said was a true story about his position dealing with fame while in a relationship. As the Q&A continues, he shares some insight on the release of his fourth album “Journey of the Gemini” and working with the Clipse before sharing speaking on R. Kelly’s legal predicament.

Lastly, Donell talks about the thought process behind his “Free” album before revealing the name of his next album will be titled “Elevate.” From there, the Chicago songwriter states that he is currently working on an LP with fellow Chicago natives Dave Hollister and Karl Thomas as a part of a new group that they recently created together called “Chi.
