Hassan Campbell shared the intense experiences of his incarceration during the mid-nineties. One month after allegedly shooting someone in the month of September, Hassan was arrested and convicted, eventually serving one and a half years behind bars. Hassan described his time in Rikers as a “gladiator school,” portraying a violent and racially charged atmosphere. He discussed how smaller minority gangs like the Bloods had to fight to survive, being targeted by larger Latino gangs. Upon his release at 21 years old, he inadvertently revealed to his mother that he was victimized by Afrika Bambaataa.
