Hassan Campbell shares his experiences growing up in the Bronx and being a part of Zulu Nation under Afrika Bambaataa. Initially seen as an appealing lifestyle, the Zulu Nation community included rappers and celebrities and captured the interests of many young individuals. Hassan’s involvement started at the age of 12 or 13, expressing that it was more than just about Bambaataa but rather the larger community. He notes certain figures, such as ‘Bill’ and his brother ‘Jeb’ as inspirations for joining. As Hassan got older, his relationship with Bambaataa gradually took a disturbing turn, recounting inappropriate behaviors that he now identifies as grooming, and eventually led to abuse. He alleges Bambaataa exploited his celebrity status to prey on young boys in the community. Moreover, Hassan insists that there are many more victims who haven’t come forward out of fear, embarrassment, or denial.
