In a revealing interview, Hector Berrellez discuss why the U.S. has not classified Mexican cartels as terrorists. Hector believes that the Mexican government’s corruption is a key factor, as they often protect and work with the cartels. The cartels bring significant wealth into the Mexican economy, an estimated $50 billion a year, which complicates efforts to dismantle them. Additionally, the Mexican president has shown little interest in combatting the cartels. Hector suggests that unless the U.S. imposes sanctions on Mexico, the cartels will continue to operate. He also emphasizes that classifying the cartels as terrorist organizations would allow for more stringent countermeasures.
