Former corrections officer Hector Bravo shared insights from his intense career, including a harrowing incident where he had to neutralize a violent inmate on meth. Bravo, who served 16 years in the California Department of Corrections, described the chaotic environment during shift changes at Centinela State Prison where stabbings frequently occurred. Bravo highlighted the systemic issues within the prison, noting that administrative policies often discouraged officers from intervening in violent situations immediately.
Recounting the most violent encounter of his career, Bravo detailed an incident at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in 2015. An inmate, armed with a shank tied to his hand, attacked a correctional officer. Bravo responded swiftly, breaking the inmate’s forearm and stomping his hand until he could be subdued. Despite the traumatic nature of these encounters, Bravo emphasized the mental fortitude required for the job and the substantial risks correctional officers face daily.
