Retired NBA player Joe Smith has opened up about his battle with depression following the end of his NBA career. Smith spoke about the difficulties he experienced during the 2011 NBA lockout and how he knew finding a job post-lockout would be tough, particularly as an older player. His feelings of uncertainty were compounded further by physical issues as he endured escalating knee problems in his final three to four years in the league. Following his retirement, Smith experienced a hardcore depression and still deals with it today. The sudden absence of the game he loved, combined with a divorce, led to a tough period for him. He reflected on the added guilt from his belief that he let his family down, contributing to the depth of his emotional struggle. Despite everything, Smith acknowledged his life is in a better place now than it was when he first stopped playing.
