In this clip, Joeboy shares a little bit about the origin story of his stage name before explaining the backstory behind the animated visualizer for the widely successful song called “Baby.” The Nigerian-based singer revealed that the main reason why he created the popular video is that he was unable to travel to South Africa to shoot the video because of his problems obtaining a travel visa. He also talks about the release of his debut EP, “Love & Light.”
Lat in the clip, Joeboy details the events leading up to the making of “Nobody” by DJ Neptune and the way in which he and Mr. Eazi became a part of the hit single that would go on to become the number one song in Africa. From there, Joeboy drops a bombshell on Shirley Ju when he reveals that the trio used body doubles to pull off the Michael Jackson-inspired choreography in the music video. As the discussion moves along, Joeboy reflects back on his involvement in the “End SARS” movement in Nigeria before sharing his own experience with police brutality in his native country. Finally, Joeboy reflects back on releasing his debut studio album, “Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic” back in 2021 before sharing the reason why he had to sit on the music for about a year due to logistical issues with his record label. Moving along, the 25-year-old singer explains his thought process for settling on a name for his debut album. Lastly, the “Don’t Call Me Back” singer talks about why he wrote a song called “Consent” and why the topic of respecting women is so important to him.
