In this clip, John “Boxer” Mendoza recounts his life as a criminal, beginning at a young age and continuing after his release from prison at 22. Mendoza was involved in activities like robbery, counterfeiting, and extortion, targeting small businesses in marginal neighborhoods in San Francisco, often owned by individuals from his own Mexican community. He acknowledges the harm he caused and the wrongness of those actions, especially against his own community, creating a sense of regret. Mendoza also shared his experience as an absent father, citing his criminal life as a reason for his decision to stay away from his son, who was raised by his mother. He acknowledges the irony in perpetuating the cycle of absent fathers that he himself fell victim to. But believes he was better off sparing his son from exposure to his criminal life.
