Maryland Governor Wes Moore delves into his family’s tumultuous past and personal grief. Governor Moore recounts his great-grandfather’s harrowing escape from South Carolina after threats from the KKK forced him and his family to flee to Jamaica. Despite this exile, Moore’s grandfather returned to the United States, driven by an unyielding belief in his right to contribute to the country of his birth. Moore also shares the traumatic memory of losing his father at just three years old. His father, a broadcast news journalist, succumbed to a rare but treatable virus after inadequate medical care. Moore painfully recalls asking his father’s lifeless body if he was coming with them. Following this tragedy, Moore’s mother, an immigrant and newly single, moved the family to the Bronx for support from her parents.
