Ms. Pat opened up about her tumultuous transition from selling crack to engaging in check fraud. The turning point in Ms. Pat’s life came when she had to take in her sister’s four kids to prevent them from being taken by social services, all while already raising her own two children. This drastic increase in responsibilities prompted significant changes in her life, including moving to Riverdale, Georgia, and grappling with an intensified financial burden. Ms. Pat’s husband encouraged her to quit selling drugs, but it was far from simple. Initially hesitant, she eventually gave up on crack dealing but soon found herself delving into check fraud. She recounted how her brother, a professional burglar, introduced her to forging checks using stolen checkbooks, an illicit activity that also saw her devising fake IDs using manipulated traffic tickets.
