Nicholas Irving, a former US Army ranger, rated the accuracy of military films and praised Mark Wahlberg’s “Lone Survivor” for its portrayal of sniper scenes. He declared it the most realistic depiction of war he has seen in cinema to date. The movie, directed by Peter Berg, focuses on four Navy SEALs and their failed mission ‘Operation Red Wings’ in Afghanistan. Irving described the woodland scene, which captures a fierce gunfight, as resembling an actual combat situation. He revealed that his unit was the one to rescue the real Marcus Luttrell, the Navy SEAL Wahlberg’s character is based on. “Saving Private Ryan” was also mentioned, but Irving emphasized that ‘Lone Survivor’ stood far above. The worst depiction of a sniper scene, in Irving’s view, was Steven Seagal’s “Sniper.” To find out why, check out the clip above.
