John “Boxer” Mendoza discussed his struggle transitioning from a life of crime, where he made fast money from drugs and robberies, to a legal lifestyle, which required working a regular job, paying taxes, and adhering to societal rules. His criminal record compounded his struggles, making it difficult to find jobs and housing, and impacted his sense of worth as a provider. He eventually found support through his wife, who helped him evade potential pitfalls. Mendoza launched a YouTube channel, initially with a former member of a Mexican gang who aimed to disseminate positive messages to children. After branching out on his own, he created his own channel, where he shared personal experiences and aimed to dissuade people from criminal activity. His experiences are chronicled in his book, and he believes that the gang life model is broken, and he aims to shed light on this through his online platform.
