Mathis has been vocal in advocating for Hoover’s release, especially after former President Trump pardoned him at the federal level, only for the state of Illinois to uphold a 200-year sentence. Mathis is currently in contact with Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, lobbying for clemency or a pardon. Mathis emphasized the potential positive influence Hoover could have on the younger generations if released, noting his reputation among reformed gang members. As Hoover, now 74, seeks a chance to spend his remaining years outside prison walls, Mathis questions why a compassionate Democratic governor like Pritzker cannot follow Trump’s move to grant Hoover freedom.
