Judge Mathis opened up about his challenging upbringing in a notorious public housing project in Detroit. Growing up in the ’70s, the environment swiftly deteriorated following the Vietnam War when many Black veterans returned home grappling with addiction. The once-stable community descended into one of Detroit’s most dangerous areas, exposing Mathis and his family to relentless adversity. Facing such stark realities, Mathis recalled resorting to crime at the tender age of ten, identifying himself as a thief who, alongside friends, would steal and sell groceries in the impoverished neighborhood. The exposure to crime didn’t end there as he evolved into committing burglaries and armed robberies in his youth.
