Despite his hopes to remain local, Sanchez was transferred to the southern Centinela State Prison near the Mexican border—a predominantly Sureño institution—due to a strategic state-wide expansion of prison facilities during Governor Pete Wilson’s term.
While in Centinela, Sanchez recounted the dramatic factional imbalance, noting how severely outnumbered Norteños, like himself, felt. This led to strategic plans devised by experienced inmates to incite a conflict that would warrant transfer and escape from the hostile environment. Despite their efforts to craft weapons for a planned incident, a shakedown thwarted their plans, resulting in solitary confinement.
