Murdered Woman's Dog Exposes Her Own Killer
In April 2023, 26-year-old Mandy Rose Reynolds was found shot and burned in a field near Robinson, Texas, her body so badly damaged it was nearly unidentifiable. The key to solving her murder came from an unexpected source: her white poodle mix named Titan, who refused to leave the crime scene and whose microchip led investigators directly to Mandy’s identity. Police soon focused on her cousin, 27-year-old Derek Gagner, who had been living with Mandy in her San Marcos apartment. Derek led officers on a high-speed chase in Mandy’s stolen Honda Accord before crashing and overdosing, and during interrogation he spun an elaborate story about Mexican cartels forcing him to dig his own grave while wearing a bulletproof vest. But surveillance footage from Walmart showing Derek purchasing a plastic storage container, shovel, and gas can, combined with cell phone records placing him at the burn site and ballistics linking Mandy’s own gun to the fatal shot, told a much different story. Investigators believe Derek killed Mandy after learning she planned to evict him from her apartment, then attempted to dispose of her body by burning it in a remote field. In November 2024, a jury convicted Derek Gagner of murder after just 35 minutes of deliberation, and he was sentenced to life in prison with eligibility for parole in 30 years.
