Beyoncé Threw an Elaborate ‘Carter Push Party’ for the Twins
In February, Beyoncé skipped the usual pregnancy announcement in favor of what would become the most-liked post in Instagram’s history, and over the weekend, the multiplatinum singer eschewed the typical baby shower in favor of what appeared to be a Nigerian-themed “Carter Push Party.” The late Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti’s likeness appeared in the background and on attendees’ clothes.
The Fela connection runs deep in the Carter family—Jay Z was a producer for the Broadway musical about Kuti’s life, while Bey reportedly recorded (and then scrapped) an entire 20-track album inspired by his sound.
Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Lawson, posted some highlights of the event, which included appearances from former Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Tennis pro Serena Williams—who is also expecting a child soon—was on hand, as well as LaLa Anthony.
Lawson orchestrated a “Happy Carter push party” chant from the guests while Afrobeat played in the background.
Since Beyoncé’s initial post announcing her pregnancy in February, the Carter twins have been the subject of much speculation and their own Saturday Night Live skit. As for the push party itself, the event is at least loosely related to the practice of the “push gift.” An in-depth 2015 report by The Today Show revealed the rise of push gifts or postpartum tokens of appreciation.
“Push presents are becoming more popular in the U.S.,” etiquette expert, Jacqueline Whitmore told Christine Coppa of Today. “It can be given before the baby is born, or even right in the delivery room.”
Beyoncé and her friends and family apparently opted to celebrate in their own unique way.
