Drake and Ludacris’ So-Called Beef, Explained
On Sunday night, during his acceptance speech for Views winning the Top Billboard 200 Album at the Billboard Music Awards, Drake took a few seconds to squash his perceived beef with Ludacris, who happened to be hosting. Check it out around the 40-second mark below:
“Ludacris, we haven’t always seen eye to eye, but I’ve always been a big fan of yours and I got a lot of love for you,” he said to his off-screen counterpart. “I want to let you know that face to face, while I’m still here.”
In case you can’t keep your beefs straight, which is perfectly understandable, this one got stirred up back in 2010 after Drizzy called out Ludacris’ usage of the “Supa Dupa” flow, which had been used liberally by Drake, Big Sean, Nicki Minaj, etc. “I hate that rappers picked that flow up,” he said at the time to AllHipHop. “I wish they had left that for people that know how to use it.”
Big Sean followed up with similar comments, prompting Luda to repond on “Bada Boom.” “Counterfeit rappers say I’m stealing they flows. But I can’t steal what you never made up, bitch,” he said, in one of several lines that are super hard to misinterpret.
Fast forward three years and Drake made his own reference to Ludacris on the track “How About Now,” a loosie turned bonus track for If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. “I used to always try and burn you CDs of my new shit/You be like, ‘Who’s this?’/I’d be like, ‘Me, girl,’ You be like, ‘Oh, word, true shit?’/Then ask if we could listen to Ludacris/Them car rides made me feel like I was losin’ it.”
Finally, in 2015, Ludacris appeared on The Breakfast Club and told the hosts/audience that Drake “apologized to him like a man.” However, he also said those lines off of “How About Now” probably had some basis in reality. “I think there is a little bit of a true story behind that,” he said. “His girl, at the time, with all due respect was probably doing a little bit more than that. It’s a true story and I think that’s why he said that.”
All that is what led up to Drake’s “we haven’t seen eye to eye” line on Sunday night. If you thought it was a little out of nowhere, or needed context, well, now you should be all caught up.
