Drake Reveals He’s Going to Host and Produce the First NBA Awards
Drake is a guy who likes to keep busy. During a recent interview with John Calipari, he talked at length about his upcoming project More Life and said that he doesn’t like to take too many breaks when it comes to making music because his “biggest fear” is that someone else will come along and find a way to do what he’s doing better. We would argue that a break every now and then wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for Drake, but it’s clear he has his sights set on continuing his dominating run, and he’s not going to stop working.
In fact, the only thing that can get Drake is stop working in the studio these days is work outside of the studio, and according to what Drake said during the same podcast interview with Coach Cal, he just landed a very high-profile gig that will put all eyes on him. He’s going to be producing and hosting the first ever NBA Awards at the end of the 2016-17 season. And he said he’s hoping to build on the success he had hosting the ESPYs to make the awards show a memorable event.
“I’m actually producing and hosting the first annual NBA Awards this year. I get to take the reins on it,” Drake said. “The ESPYs let me do great things, and I thank them a lot for that. Usually, awards shows sometimes are a bit restricted. But they let me do a lot at the ESPYs, so we’ll just expand on that concept.”
Drake also spoke on what makes hosting big events so much fun for him.
“I love being in a room full of iconic, legendary people that I look up to and having that pressure of having to make them laugh and enjoy their evening,” he said.
The NBA announced the NBA Awards show back in November. It’s scheduled to take place in New York City on June 26 and will feature appearances from tons of current and former NBA players and coaches as well as a long list of celebrities. The NBA MVP, NBA Rookie of the Year, NBA Sixth Man of the Year, NBA Defensive Player of the Year, NBA Most Improved Player, and Coach of the Year awards will all be announced during the show.
