Jay Z Weighs in on Women’s Marches

While discussing his new Spike docuseries Time: The Kalief Browder Story at the Sundance Film Festival Wednesday, Jay Z threw his support behind the ongoing Women’s March initiatives. Despite the daily onslaught of fuckery since Trump took office, including a reporter trying to ask Jay Z about Trump before being shut down, the legendary rapper believes the power—the real power—still lies with the people.

“More than ever, the people have to come together,” Jay Z said during a post-screening Q&A, the Daily Beast reported. “We have to tell these stories, and we have to organize in a way that we never have before, because that’s the only thing that affects change. I hate to sound like such a cynic. Everything is based on votes, and who you can put in office.”

The path to change, Jay Z added, starts with organization. “We have to organize,” he said Wednesday. “I’ve been in these meetings, I’ve spoken with people, I’ve done many things behind the scenes, but most important: We are the power. The Women’s March proved this, Jay said“I’m sure a lot of you guys participated in it, but that display of woman power the other day was so amazing and we saw the effect: That no matter what, no matter who’s in office, we are the people that’s in power,” he said.

Time: The Kalief Browder Story is a six-part docuseries centered on Kalief Browder, a 16-year-old student who spent years on Rikers Island despite not having been convicted of a crime. “Kalief Browder is a modern day prophet; his story a failure of the judicial process,” Jay said when announcing the project last October. “A young man, and I emphasize young man, who lost his life because of a broken system.” The series hits Spike later this year.

Women’s March organizers have now launched a new campaign entitled 10 Actions/100 Days, in which participants will take united action on a specific issue every 10 days. For more information, please click here.
