Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, ASAP Rocky, and More Turn Up on Yams Day
Jan. 18, 2015, marked a tragic loss for ASAP Mob. It was the day the group’s founder, ASAP Yams, died unexpectedly at the age of 26—leaving behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. Since his untimely death, fans and friends have paid tribute to the late rapper: There was the book of memorable Yams tweets, the Mob’s “Yamborghini High” track, as well as the crew’s Cozy Tapes Vol. 1 mixtape. But the biggest tribute is, without a doubt, the annual Yams Day memorial concert.
This year’s event took place at New York’s Theater at Madison Square Garden, where artists like ASAP Rocky, ASAP Ferg, Danny Brown, Tyler, the Creator, and, of course, ASAP Mob performed for a sold-out crowd. Some previously-unannounced all star guests came out as well to surprise the crowd.
Tyler, of course, didn’t let a memorial get in the way of his attitude.
Kodak Black showed love.
Among the surprise guests were a couple of guys named The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar—maybe you’ve heard of them?
Kendrick’s TDE compatriot ScHoolboy Q was on hand as well.
And, of course, what’s a night of turn up music without French Montana?
But no matter how much fun was had, no one forgot for a second who the crowd had gathered together to honor.
Prior to last year’s inaugural Yams Day, Rocky sat down with Hot 97 to discuss his expectations for the concert:
“It’s all about everybody coming together, regardless of regions, blocks, backgrounds, groups. It’s about everybody spreading that love,” Rocky said. “I want to see ‘1 Train.’ […] I’m using that as an analogy. I want see that amongst hip-hop, but in the physical. Like sportsmanship, everybody just respecting each other as individual artists and appreciating each other.”
