Kid Capri Says He Recorded More Collaborations With Kendrick Lamar
Fans were prepared for several high-profile collaborations on Kendrick Lamar’s new album, Damn, even before we knew artists like Rihanna and U2 would feature on the project. But few people would have expected multiple appearances from the legendary DJ Kid Capri, who turned up on several of the album’s standout tracks.
According to Capri, his collaboration with K-Dot isn’t quite done yet. Speaking on his role on Damn with Mass Appeal, Capri revealed there may be more work with Kendrick on the way, and that he only heard the album for the first time after the full album released:
I came to the studio and recorded a lot of stuff, they took what they wanted, placed it where they needed to place it. I think they’ve got some more stuff—there are some more things—coming out later, but for right now, that’s what happened.
I didn’t even hear the album, I didn’t want to hear anything until it was done. So when I heard it last night, that was my first time just like it was yours. And my phone hasn’t stopped ringing yet, man, it’s crazy.
Capri was a pioneer of the early hip-hop scene and one of the few members of the old guard still touring and staying involved with the culture. Hearing his voice bellowing on tracks like “Element”, “Love”, and “XXX” brings back decades worth of memories for rap fans, who have all heard Capri pop up on their favorite artist’s song at one point or another. Any additional songs in that vein would be welcome.
Kendrick has reserved spots on his albums for legends like RZA, MC Eiht, and George Clinton, and Capri’s team-up on Damn adds another storied chapter to the book. Though his career dates back longer than Kendrick has been alive, Capri still showed reverence for Damn and could feel the authenticity in the final project. “Incredible album,” he said. “And the fact that he didn’t overdo it with me, but made me the narrator of the album, I thought that was brilliant.”
Damn is an album packed with music for rap fans of all types, from bangers you can throw on in the car to storytelling you have to rewind a few times to fully process. Diversity like that will earn you the respect of a lot of people, including the likes of a certified legend like Kid Capri.
