Lin-Manuel Miranda Shares the Full ‘Hamilton Mixtape’
After seeing a number of singles released over the last several weeks, The Hamilton Mixtape is finally available in full. The 23-track project includes appearances from Chance the Rapper, Kelly Clarkson, Nas, Dave East, Usher, Sia, Regina Spektor, Alicia Keys, K’naan, The Roots, Ashanti, Jill Scott, Wiz Khalifa, John Legend, and more.
The mixtape draws inspiration from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s acclaimed Broadway show; a number of tracks are built around samples of songs from the show, while others are more straightforward covers from it.
Hamilton has become a political flash point in the recent presidential election. VP Elect Mike Pence went to see the show shortly after the election and was on the receiving end of a speech from the cast imploring him to make sure the administration represented “all people.” Although he later said he was not offended by the remarks, President Elect Donald Trump sent out several tweets demanding that the cast apologize, and conservative groups later called for a boycott of the sold-out show.
So far, tracks like “Immigrants (We Get the Job Done),” “My Shot (Rise Up Remix),” and “Wrote My Way Out” have already gained popularity, and the rest of the mixtape will no doubt be attractive to fans of the musical. Black Thought served as the tape’s executive producer, and recently told Billboard that it wasn’t hard to get rappers on board once the musical took off. “As the popularity of the production grew, more artists wanted to align themselves and wanted to associate with the project. More people on our wish list became available once they realized the importance of the play,” he said.
