Mariah Carey New Year’s Eve Performance Twitter Reactions

While we’d hope that the majority of you are (safely) turning up to celebrate the New Year, there were a number of you sitting online, watching ABC’s annual New Year’s Rockin’ Eve showcase. Broadcasting live from Times Square in New York City, there are a number of performances going down, and this year included the ultimate diva, Mariah Carey…who seemed to not be here for it.

During her set, things seemed to go awry early. After an awful lip-sync performance of “Auld Lang Syne,” it looked like Mariah was startled that the backing track for “Emotion” hit. Then she let it be known to the millions in Times Square and the millions watching at home that she “can’t hear” and that they “didn’t have a check for this song, so we’ll just say it went to number one… I’m going to say let the audience sing.” Instead of doing what her back-up dancers did, she visibly let it be known that she wasn’t here for the performance, smiling through the truly awkward moment.

While she said “put these monitors on please,” the damage was already done. While she went through the motions during “We Belong Together,” Twitter let her have it.
