Meek Mill May Have Subbed Drake and Nicki Minaj on ‘Meekend Music’
Meek Mill celebrated the big 3-0 on Saturday by putting out his new three-track EP Meekend Music. And immediately after its release, people began theorizing about Meek sending subliminal shots at Drake and Nicki Minaj on the project.
For example, in the third verse on “Left Hollywood,” Meek appears to make a subtle mention of Drake’s recent album More Life: “Where I’m from, if when you turn 18 then that’s more life.” It’s far from a scathing reference, but Meek seems to take a stronger shot at the Toronto rapper on the closing verse on “$lay,” featuring ASAP Ferg.
In the song, Meek may have reiterated the ghostwriting accusations he made against Drake in 2015, rapping: “Packing this bitch and you know we reloaded/Look at the credits and tell you who wrote it.” The ghostwriting claims have been a huge issue in Meek and Drake’s ongoing beef. Meek blasted Drake for allegedly using a ghostwriter for his feature on “R.I.C.O.” (Dreams Worth More Than Money). He boldly stated Quentin Miller was the man behind some of Drake’s rhymes; however, the Atlanta rapper has since denied these claims.
It looks like Drake’s meeting with Rick Ross didn’t squash the beef with Meek completely.
And now for the Nicki subs. In the opening verse on “$lay,” the Philadelphia rapper makes a play on his ex’s name: “Woke up this morning, I had a ménage.” Several lines later, he raps: “I’m on the roof with that scope, and I hit them lil bitches like Remy, my nigga.” The latter is the most obvious shot, as it refers to Nicki’s highly publicized feud with Remy Ma. Though the female rappers have taken shots at each other for a while now, many believe Remy buried The Pinkprint artist with the release of “shEHTER.”
We should also point out that it probably wasn’t a coincidence that Nicki decided to put the official music video for her song, “Regret in Your Tears,” a track that is believed to be about Meek, on YouTube and Vevo this weekend, just in time for Meek’s birthday. She debuted the video earlier this week on Tidal before dropping it on YouTube and Vevo on Saturday and promoting her recent string of videos on Twitter:
It’s clear it’ll be a while before the involved parties finally let all of this go. It’s also clear we weren’t the only ones listening out for Meek’s Drake and Nicki subs on Meekend Music.
