Smino Shares Silky New Song “Anita”

“The song is inspired by black women and how much we need them, especially the forgotten ones,” Smino tells Pigeons & Planes about the inspiration behind his new single, “Anita.”

Getting ready to drop his debut album blkswn this year, this is the St. Louis rapper’s first material of 2017—and it comes with a timely message.

“With Trump in office, now is such an important time to be confident about blackness,” he says. “We need some congregational-ass music that we can sing together.”

Along with bright, skittering production from go-to collaborator Monte Booker, the song is packaged in cover art that beautifully captures the song’s essence. “[The] cover idea came from me playing 8ball on the iPhone all the time w/ my shawty,” he tells us. “For those of y’all who don’t send ‘LetsPlay8ball’ to shawtys in the morning, you missing out.”
