Steve McQueen Will Be Directing a 2Pac Documentary

Following a deal between Shakur estate trustee Tom Whalley and Amaru Entertainment, the company founded by 2Pac’s mother Afeni to release his posthumous projects, it was announced on Tuesday that a fully authorized documentary on the life of 2Pac will be made. To cap it off, it will reportedly be directed by Steve McQueen

McQueen, who you may know as the actor who’s been dead for almost 40 years director of the Academy Award-winning 12 Years a Slave, expressed his satisfaction with helming the project in a statement. “I am extremely moved and excited to be exploring the life and times of this legendary artist,” he said. “I attended NYU film school in 1993 and can remember the unfolding hip-hop world and mine overlapping with Tupac’s through a mutual friend in a small way. Few, if any shined brighter than Tupac Shakur. I look forward to working closely with his family to tell the unvarnished story of this talented man.”

Though 2Pac was gunned down at the age of 25, his short life will undoubtedly provide tons of subject matter for the film. His five-year recording career led to the sale of more than 75 million albums, he starred in a number of films, and he also became the first solo hip-hop artist elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
