In a recent interview, producer and collaborator Neckbone shed light on how Death Row Records’ legal battles, including RICO charges, stalled Lady of Rage’s album release. Initially set to drop before 1995’s “Doggystyle,” her debut was postponed until 1997 amid the chaos at Death Row. Neckbone, who was closely involved in the production and management side, recalled Lady of Rage’s consistent presence during major sessions and her determination despite the label’s issues. He explained how Interscope Records was pressured by federal investigations to freeze deals, disrupting promotion and distribution efforts. This pause hindered the momentum for Lady of Rage, whose single “Afro Puffs” had set high expectations. Neckbone also highlighted the challenges female artists faced within the male-dominated Death Row and how the label’s turmoil affected their creative output. Despite the setbacks, Lady of Rage’s talent and drive remained undeniable throughout the ordeal.
