Benzino On The Rise And Fall Of The Iconic Source Magazine 'The Internet Killed Us"

Benzino spoke to The Hip Hop Uncensored podcast about The Source Maagazine’s rise and fall. The Source was launched 26 years ago at a time when hip-hop was only beginning to take root. Rap journalism was a dream back then. The genre was not available to a large audience. This niche was the original purpose of The Source. The Source provides industry-related commentary, reviews, and reports. It became synonymous with the best and worst of culture. It became a popular title in the country, and was also involved in the same feuds among the rappers about which it was written. The Source finds itself in a difficult position as it must rebuild itself in a volatile publishing sector. VIBE, one its main competitors, has closed its print edition, and XXL (a rival rap magazine) has been sold to a media conglomerate. The Source hopes to recapture the excitement of the past when rappers wanted the Hip-Hop Quotable or Unsigned Hype columns. It was the only source of everything hip-hop when it got shout-outs in songs.
