Authorities claim that Bill Omar Carrasquillo (known online as “Omi In a Hellcat”) built a multimillion-dollar illegal streaming business. They now want to convict him, and seize millions of assets.

He recorded every step in the journey and posted videos online advertising his subscription service.

All that was about to change when federal authorities arrested Carrasquillo. He is better known to his subscribers as “Omi in a Hellcat”, and was accused of leading one of the most successful digital piracy campaigns of the past decade. Photos of Carrasquillo stripped and in neon boxer briefs, as agents handcuffed and placed him in his foyer were quickly shared on Instagram. The video shows agents mingling around while a woman streamed it live to the Internet repeatedly asking: “What’s the deal?”

Carrasquillo (35), and two business associates — Jesse Gonzales (42) of Pico Rivera, Calif. and Michael Barone (36) of Richmond Hill, N.Y. – are facing 62 counts of indictment. These charges include conspiracy to commit tax evasion and copyright violations. They could be sent to prison for many decades.

Their company was known at different times under the names Gears TV and Gears Reloaded as a paradise for media streamers. For as low as $15 per month, subscribers had access to hundreds of movies and TV shows on demand, such as Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead. They also had access to dozens of live channels and pay-per view events.Prosecutors have moved to strip him of nearly $35 million in assets, including 57 luxury cars — Lamborghinis, Porsches, Bentleys, and McLarens — and a portfolio of more than four dozen properties he has amassed across Philadelphia and the suburbs.

“You can’t just go and monetize someone else’s copyrighted content with impunity,” said Bradley S. Benavides, acting head of the FBI’s Philadelphia office. “Theft is theft, and if you’re going to willfully steal another party’s intellectual property, the FBI stands ready to step in and shut you down.”

The case sits at the cutting edge of digital copyright law and the recent proliferation of services offering cheap streams of protected intellectual property.
