An innumerable amount of rappers have found themselves stuck in the prison system for varying periods of time and under varying circumstances, but few are able to maintain their popularity, let alone see it become bigger than it was when they were free, but Max B is not your typical rapper. Coming out of Harlem during the mid-aughts, Max B would hit the mixtape scene hard, making his debut in 2006 after appearing on numerous songs from Jim Jones’ Harlem: Diary of a Summer album, which made the then-unknown rapper an instant fan favorite.

Inking a deal with Jim Jones’ ByrdGang label, Max B’s star would gradually rise, with appearances on albums from Cam’ron (Killa Season) and Jim Jones (Hustler’s P.O.M.E.). Max B would also pen the song “We Fly High” for Jim Jones, which reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, further evidence of his immense knack for songwriting and melody. However, his career would be derailed after being found guilty of murder conspiracy and robbery charges in 2009. He was sentenced to 75 years in prison.

Max B has maintained his innocence and has been fighting to get his case appealed, but his buzz and celebrity has continued to spread due to countless mixtapes he recorded prior to prison, helping turn himself into a cult figure. A number of fans have kept his name alive by exposing his music, as well as his off-kilter croon, to a new fan base.

With one studio album, Vigilante Season in 2011, more than a dozen solo mixtapes and additional material to his name, Max B is regarded as one of the more prolific artists of his era, with artists like Wiz Khalifa all invoking his name and speaking to his influence over the years. With news that Max B will be appearing on a song with pop sensation The Weeknd and close friend and collaborator French Montana, and constant speculation around when he be released from prison and hit the streets again, The Wave is currently in high demand.

To celebrate his career and the lasting impact that his wave has had on the rap game, we’ve put together a list of 20 of the best solo songs to date that every Max B fan should know. You can’t stop The Wave!
