20 of the Best Weed-Inspired Hip-Hop Songs
In case you’re not a stoner, today (April 20) is internationally known as 4/20, and that means people across the globe are blazing up in celebration of the smoker’s holiday—and they’re probably bumping some Wiz Khalifa while they’re at it. Wiz has more than a few songs specifically about smoking weed, but he’s far from being the only rapper with a smoker’s anthem to his name.
The Beastie Boys became one of the very first rap acts to make songs about getting high when they dropped “Hold it Now Hit it” back in 1986. Since then, plenty of other MCs have followed in the group’s footsteps.
In 1994, OutKast dropped their seminal debut, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, and among the tracks on the album was “Crumblin’ Erb,” a song that featured Big Boi and 3 Stacks tell folks from their neighborhood to stop shooting and start smoking. A year later, Luniz dropped “I Got 5 on It,” an anthem for everyone on their way to cop a dime bag—which, if you didn’t know—is a $10 bag of weed.
In 2010, Wiz Khalifa dropped his classic Kush & OJ mixtape, which could probably be considered an entire project’s worth of weed songs (“Still Blazin” still bumps to this day). A little over a year later, he and Snoop Dogg dropped “Young Wild & Free,” with Bruno Mars, and the track became another instant weed smoker’s anthem.
To celebrate 4/20 the right way, XXL takes a look at 20 of the best weed-inspired songs in rap history. There are plenty more but these are a few to serve as the soundtrack to any smoker’s high. Get lifted below.
