The tragic death of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards at the hands of a police officer makes Big Sean’s new video a timely one. The Detroit rapper plays the role of a guardian angel-type figure, overseeing senseless violence in his “Light” music video, directed by Lawrence Lamont.

Sean shared the inspiration for the clip in a lengthy post on Twitter.

“We shot this video a couple months ago and sucks to see these scenes are still consistently playing out in real life…even down to this week,” he wrote. “It’s disheartening sometimes to see that not much has changed when it comes to hate, police brutality [and] just overall people losing their lives too early. But when I wrote this song, it was to reassure myself that no matter what happens, they can’t take away our Soul, our confidence, our ideas, [and] all that makes us shine. This song isn’t a single, but is still super important to me, so I paid for a lot of this outta pocket to make sure we got this out. Rest in peace to all those who have lost life due to senseless actions. As I always say, each one of us have the power to make a change, it starts within….the inner Light.”

While the world continues to deal with violence at the hands of police and regular citizens alike, Sean aims to provide hope amid the chaos. The “On the Come Up” MC provides an uplifting message on the Jeremih-assisted “Light,” which appears on his I Decided album.

“You know, take the fame, take the crib, take our cars/Now we gotta take the train, hood niggas taking chains/Slave master take our names, 5-0 take the shot/And young souls take the blame, man, but they can’t take away the light,” Sean raps.
