Chance The Rapper and Jeremih Team Up for ‘I Shoulda Left You’
Like a light snow falling in the dead of night, Chance The Rapper and Jeremih surprised fans with a new release this week, a holiday-themed mixtape titled Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama. Chance later shared on Twitter that the project was started earlier this month, thanking Hannibal Buress, Lud Foe, King Louie, Noname, CSick, Peter Cottontale and all who helped.
Of the project’s nine tracks, one standout is “I Shoulda Left You” featuring Lud Foe, an ode to shedding relationships in the new year. When the project first dropped, feature details weren’t made available, but Lud Foe wrote on Twitter afterward that he contributed to the track.
An icy turn for the usually cozy Chance, the Chicagoan raps the hook with a “No Problem”-like cadence, punctuating every word. Towards the song’s conclusion, Chance remembers many of the people lost this past year including Prince. He then raps, “Please can we get back Craig Sager, leave your ass at the rim.” Sager died last week at the age of 65 after losing a battle with acute myeloid leukemia.
Jeremih appeared on “Summer Friends” off Chance’s Coloring Book earlier this year, what is considered by many as one of the year’s best releases, and on Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama, the two further their chemistry.
