Before the 32-year-old emcee was assisting Kanye West with hit records and creating his own tracks, CyHi was a middle school student playing in a marching band with high school students—but he wasn’t supposed to be.
“I was in the marching band for like six months until they realized that I didn’t go to the school,” CyHi remembers. “I wasn’t supposed to be in the band is the moral of the story. I was in the eighth grade, and my dude in my neighborhood played the Tuba. He was in the twelfth grade, but he was a section leader. So, anything he kind of said in the band went. He brought me in like: ‘Band director this is…He gon’ play baritone. They took me in there fitted me for the outfit.”

Although CyHi was able to keep up with the high school students, the youngster realized that he was way out of his league.
“I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t know how to read music. And what’s so funny [about it] is after every game the band director used to be like, ‘Somebody off in that section. I don’t know who it is, but somebody off.’ He used to be so mad, but my partner was the section leader, and he used to vouch for me, so he never knew it was me. I’m all off key. I’m throwing the song all off, man and that sh*t used to be funny.”
