Donald Trump’s Order Bars Syrian Refugees From Entering The U.S.

Donald Trump has remained adamant on closing America’s borders to immigrants and refugees since he began his campaign. Now, according to CNN, a new executive order signed by the president will put his controversial legislation, mainly concerning Muslims, into action.

On Friday (Jan. 27), Trump enacted the mandate under the name “Protection Of The Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into The United States.” Specifically, he hopes Syrian citizens seeking refuge would instead utilize his proposed “safe zones” within their country to relocate amid Syria’s internal war.

During a press conference, Trump said the arrival of Syrian refugees on American soil “is detrimental to the interests of the United States and thus suspend any such entry.” He later continued, “I am establishing new vetting measures to keep radical Islamic terrorists out of the United States of America…We don’t want them here.” The order will also decline entry of refugees for 90 days, which will impact citizens of other countries including Yemen, Sudan, Iran, Somalia, Libya and Iraq. In addition, the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program will halt visas for 120 days, until Trump’s administration can determine which countries will accurately fit their vetting procedures.

According to Reuters, the order will also impact Iraqis who aided America in the 2003 war. Those who’ve established a life in the U.S. did so under the Special Immigrant Visa program. The site adds that over 7,000 Iraqis served as interpreters for the U.S. during the invasion.

“This executive order is based on ignorance and fear,” Allen Vaught, a former U.S. Army captain who was present during the Iraqi war, said to Reuters. “And you do not lead a country with ignorance and fear.”

In a previous interview with the Christian Broadcast Network, Trump shifted his attention to providing a sanctuary for persecuted Christians around the world. “They’ve been horribly treated,” he said. “Do you know if you were a Christian in Syria it was impossible, at least very tough to get into the United States?”
